Average function in Excel

Basically, AVERAGE function is used to get average of a group of numbers or within a given dataset of numbers. It returns the average of selected values and it can handle up to 255 individual arguments including numbers, cell references, ranges, arrays and constants.

Syntax

=AVERAGE (number1, [number2], …)

Where, number1 and number2 (optional) are the arguments passed by the user to get the average of number or cell reference which refers to numeric values.

N.B. In mathematical operation, Average calculated by adding numeric values (at least two) and then dividing by the count of numeric values. You can also perform these two operations in Excel by using SUM & COUNT function.

Look at the below screenshots to properly understand the procedure. Let’s consider, we have some sample values like in the below image,

We want to calculate Average of these values. So, we chose a blank cell labeled as Average and below the label we want to show the result.

So, for that, we will type “=Average”’ and pass the values as arguments by manually input them into the Average function. Like this,

Or, we can reference a range of cells to do the same operation.

In both ways, we will get the same average for those data values.

Keep in mind, Average function will ignore blank cells, logical values and numbers entered as texts. Hope, this tutorial give you a clear idea about how to calculate average in Excel.
